About Us

"Founded Upon Benevolence"

The fundamental principle of the Society of “mutual assurance and mutual risk” was set forth in the Society’s original charter and remains our mission today.

The Mutual Assurance Society Against Fire on Buildings of the State of Virginia was founded on December 22, 1794, by an act of incorporation by the Virginia General Assembly. On May 17, 1982, the members of the Society changed the name of the company to “Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia.”

Today we operate much the same way as we did at our beginning. We provide our members with quality insurance protection at a reasonable cost always striving to do so in a caring and efficient manner.

Policies & Coverages

The Society writes personal lines property coverages with major emphasis on homeowner policies. Dwelling fire, personal articles floater and personal umbrella liability policies are available for qualified policyholders.

Homeowners Policy:
A homeowners insurance policy is a package policy that combines more than one coverage in a single policy form.

Condo Unit Owners Policy:
Coverage for the owner of a condo unit occupied as a primary or secondary residence.

Dwelling Fire Policy:
Coverage for one or two family dwellings which are tenant occupied

Renters Policy:
Coverage for a tenant renting a home or an apartment.

Personal Umbrella Liability Policy:
Additional coverage for personal liability. This policy provides coverage for personal liability after coverage has been exhausted under your underlying homeowners, auto and/or boat policies.

If you have an emergency claim during the weekend, on holidays or after regular business hours (Mon-Fri 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), please call (800) 648-1794 or (877) 231-9288.

Catastrophe Claim Reporting
All catastrophe claims should be reported by calling (800) 648-1794. You may also call our Claims Call Center directly at (877) 231-9288. Catastrophe claims will be prioritized based on the severity of the claim and assigned to staff or independent claim adjusters for handling.
